The Parents: Part 2: Paris

After we arrived from the South, we got settled in, I showed my parents my apartment and then we went for dinner at one of my favorite little cafés in Montmartre. It was a lovely, flower-filled dinner.

On our way home, we snuck up on the Sacre Coeur from behind and marveled at its majestic beauty.

We went around the front and took in a beautiful view of Paris from the top of the hill, and I snapped this sweet photo of Mom & Tom gazing at the Eiffel Tower in the distance.

The next day we took a stroll through the Champs-Élysées, did some window shopping (or "window licking" as they say here) and stopped over at a few cafés in the process. We were definitely flâneurs.

No problem with a little Renault 2-seater to scoot around Paris in!

The next day we started off at Jardin du Luxembourg, with some sunshine and macarons from Jean-Pierre Hévin. YUM.

We walked north to Shakespeare and Company...

Where Tom tickled the ivories...

And I tickled the typewriter keys.

Just across the river is Notre Dame, which my mom has waited her whole life to see.

I kept taking Mom's-head-on-Tom's-shoulder shots, which I thought were romantic, and eventually my mom said, "It's more fatigue than anything." Walking around all day will do that to you! I still think it's sweet.

That night Tom and I picked up a quick bite at a hidden-away, delicious and authentic pizzeria in the 18th.

After not getting to spend Mother's Day or my mom's recent birthday in April with her, I declared July 2nd to be her Unbirthday. I planned the day to make her feel as special as she is. We spent the day, just the two of us, on a Jenna-guided Amelie Tour. I met her at the train station (at Lamarck-Caulaincourt, where Amelie drops off the old blind man before dashing up the stairs) and I came down the stairs singing (loudly), "A Very Merry Un-Birthday To You."

One of the big landmarks to see was Les Deux Moulins, the café where Amelie worked. We ended up sitting in the very spot where the jealous guy sits every day in the movie.

(don't we look exactly alike here?)

Mom had a mid-morning super hot chocolate.

Another fun landmark in Montmartre is the front of the Sacre Coeur, where Amelie leads her love around guided by blue arrows.

That night, I had tickets for the three of us to see a string concert of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" at Sainte-Chapelle. To see and hear this was... indescribable. The sun began to set during the concert, pouring powerful late-day light in through the cathedral of stained glass.

And the string ensemble was amazing. So beautiful, I can't really even do it justice on this blog. I cried for half of it. If you're ever in Paris, that is the most underrated activity you should DEFINITELY do.

Afterwards we went in search of nourishment.

We settled in at a beautiful little restaurant in the 2nd arrondissement. While we awaited our very, very delicious food (and the best white wine I've ever had), Mom and Tom silently drank their entire glasses of water, and looked at each other, and kept drinking.

Tom ordered the Baba Au Rhum, a common dessert in Paris, and I guess nobody realized (except me) that it would be a cake drenched in booze. With a bottle of extra booze just in case it wasn't enough. Mom and I took over the reins, but it did not get finished!

Tuesday I let them have a romantic day alone in Paris together, and Wednesday I met up with them for a special dinner for Tom's real birthday, the 4th of July. I said to him, "This may be your first birthday without fireworks!" We went to Gallopin, a beautiful art deco brasserie with sweet waiters, a reasonable prix-fixe menu, and the best foie gras I've ever, ever tasted.

I finally tried escargot, which was actually pretty tasty. I happen to love garlic.

I had told the waiter it was Tom's birthday, and by surprise they brought out his dessert with a fiery sparkler on top. We all sang "Happy Birthday" to him. I've never, ever seen a French restaurant do this before! So he did get some fireworks after all.

We walked a bit after dinner, through the lovely neighborhood near the restaurant.

And I gave the birthday duo some parting gifts from Arnaud Lahrer.

I had a fabulous and fun week with my parents - an experience I'll never forget! They're masters at traveling. I'm so glad and grateful they were able to make the trip happen, and that we got to share so many adventures together in France.

The Parents: Part 1: The South

My mom claims that they narrowed their 1200 photos of their trip to France down to a measly 14 to show their friends. 14! I will not be so kind, but I will try to abbreviate. Here's the story of my time with my parents in France.

I took the train from Paris to Nîmes on a cloudy Monday morning and watched the rain of Paris dissolve into the sunniness of Provence.

It was so good to see them at the station.

We chilled out the first night at their home exchange maison, a beautiful residence with olive trees and lavender and the wide open sky.

We listened to Django Reinhardt and smoked cigars and talked about astronomy as the sun begrudgingly went down.

The next day we headed out on a little road trip. We told my mom we were just going to Monaco and the French Riviera, but Tom and I had secret plans.

'Round about this time, we kept on driving and told my mom, "You've been kidnapped. We're going all the way to Italy."

Onto San Remo it was!

We found a cute little pizzeria to have lunch at, and my two years of Italian studies promptly shut down, held hostage by my new Frenchified brain.

We still managed to order and have a beautiful seaside lunch.

We dipped our toes into the Mediterranean and enjoyed the expanse.

Next we wound our way around the coast to Monaco, home of fast cars, Grace Kelly and lots of rich people. The coast was unimaginably beautiful, and photos don't do it justice.

We wandered around Monaco, looking for a nice place to have a cocktail.

"Where should we go?" "Oh, I don't know, how about the Billionaire's Club?" "Yes, the Billionaire's Club is fine."

That's where we ended up - at the top of a massive hotel overlooking all of Monaco and its blue, blue sea.

Mom and I had deliciously cold cocktails.

And Tom had what he claims to be the most delicious 2-bite club sandwich of his life.

Next it was on to Nice, where I'd been before but am always down for hanging around in again. It was beautiful and we got to swim a bit in the Mediterranean, among Italian and French teenagers who probably do this every year.

We went in search of food...

And ended up at one of many traditional Nice pizzerias, but what seemed like the best one ever. The setting sun threw a crazy gold light on the old town around us.

We did not get lost on the way home.
The next day, Mom enjoyed the lavender at the house.

And we went into town, this one being called Uzés, and had some ice cream.

I got thyme-flavored ice cream. It was amazing.

There was a lot of relaxing to be done at the house. My parents know how to strategize to make the most of their energy.

Our borrowed car kiiiiiiinda broke down, and when Phillippe came over to fix it, I was the translator. It turns out I know a lot more French than I thought I did. "Le batterie c'est cassé. C'est mort!"

While Mom watched from above.

Later that day we found some lavender fields and Mom and I romped.

You have to get your hugs in while you can, and a lavender field in Provence is a nice place to do it.

On our way back, we caught sight of this incredible sunflower field and pulled over to check it out. The sunflowers, straight out of a Van Gogh painting, were as big as our faces.

I have no recollection of where this photo was taken or when, but it seems to be a vineyard?

After a lovely week together down in the South, it was time for me to show off Paris. So up we went...

And I came home to some awesome, awesome mail from my peeps at PS260.

Next time: Jenna, the Paris Tour Guide.

A Stroll Along The Champs-Élysées

Just spent a week with this cute couple:

... and it was awesome! I love to see their smiles so wide. Details to follow, when I get all the pictures from their iPhones.
